Autophagy is a conserved intracellular degradation process that is activated under condition of stress. During this event, diverse intracellular contents since proteins until organelles as mitochondria are degraded. The study of autophagy has spurred renewed interest because it functions not only as a cytoprotective mechanism, but also as a programmed process of cell death. The role of autophagy in cell elimination has been proposed as a strategy for combatting cancer cells that do not respond as expected to the induction of cytotoxic or apoptotic processes.
