Assessment of oral health status of elderly population living in residential care facilities

Oariona Lowe, DDS*; Evangelos Rossopoulos, DDS

Oral health is an integral part of overall health. It includes the ability to taste, chew, swallow, speak, and smile. Barriers exist which prevent achieving good oral health in vulnerable populations. The nation's poor, medically compromised and persons with physical and intellectual disabilities, minority groups and the elderly are part of this vulnerable, 'special needs' group. Recent studies show that the oral health status of these patients is poor and they have limited access to dental services.

Li Zhongjie; Lan Tingting; Liu Yang*

Centric Relation (CR) is probably the most controversial concept in dentistry, with significantly impact on education, clinical practice, and research as well. The current and potential future uses of platelet-rich plasma in orthodontics

Parmjit Singh*; Kutana Namarach; Wedad Rashed Salem; Khansa Shahzadi

Platelets are a rich source of growth factors and by careful preparation of venous blood it is possible to derive Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) as well as Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF). The last few decades has seen a growth in the use of PRP and PRF in dentistry, predominantly related to dental implants, oral surgery and periodontology. There is emerging literature on the use of these derivatives in orthodontics and some promising animal studies have been reported that suggest faster tooth movement and therefore shorter treatment time.

Standardized dental diagnostic terminology

Elsbeth Kalenderian*, Rachel B Ramoni, Muhammad F Walji

Medicine has long benefited from the International Classification of Disease (ICD), which was adopted in 1900 as an international standard for describing diagnosis. Dentistry and dental quality improvement activities have not enjoyed the same benefits of ICD as medicine has, due to the limited representation of oral health diagnoses in ICD. The advent of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) has served as a catalyst to fill this knowledge representation gap in dentistry, and standardized dental diagnostic terminologies are in their early days of broader adoption.

Can we move teeth faster? The effectiveness of different approaches

Mushriq F Abid

An increase in the number of patients seeking orthodontic care at shorter treatment duration is a recurring request. Different approaches have been advocated and used to meet these expectations ranging from biological approaches using different types of molecules and devices to more aggressive and invasive procedures involving surgical interventions. Some of these methods have been proven to be effective in accelerating the amount of tooth movement in both animals and human. The biological approach, most of the molecules used has shown promising results however, the mechanism underlying their effect is still not fully understood and the dose and the duration of treatment is not fully established.
